Reporting Office for Essential Human Pharmaceuticals

Since 2015, the NES Reporting Office for Essential Human Pharmaceuticals has been tasked with swiftly identifying supply shortages or disruptions of essential medicines. It takes appropriate action when the industry can no longer manage the situation.

Organisation

The Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FONES) is the coordination centre for the various actors involved in ensuring Switzerland's economic supply. It coordinates efforts to prepare and implement appropriate measures in the event of shortages. The FONES also monitors compulsory stockpiling. During a shortage, it plays a key role in communicating measures to business and the general public. In addition to the Federal Office for National Economic Supply, the actors in the national economic supply include the militia cadre, the cantonal delegates, other federal organs and the armed forces.

Brochure on emergency supplies now also available in English

The brochure containing the recommendations of the NES for emergency supplies is now also available in English. This will enable the information on why and how to build up a private supply for around a week to be disseminated even more widely.

NES Divisions

Energy

The Energy Division plans and secures the country's supply of key energy resources in the event of serious shortages.

Therapeutic products

The Therapeutic Products Division is responsible for planning and ensuring the country's supply of essential pharmaceuticals, medical devices and hygiene products in the event of severe shortages that the economy cannot manage independently. Therapeutic products encompass both pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Foodstuffs

An adequate food supply is essential for survival. Consequently, food shortages are immediately perceived as a crisis. The Foodstuffs Division ensures that Switzerland maintains a supply of critical commodities and foodstuffs during serious shortages.

Logistics

The NES can intervene with support measures in the event of major disruptions to the logistics chains supplying the country with critical goods.

ICT

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are essential for businesses and institutions. A large-scale ICT failure would seriously jeopardise the functioning of the economy.

Industry

Plastic granules, packaging, chemicals (such as ethanol and industrial gases) and emergency power generators are essential to the country's economic supply. The Industry Division ensures that supply-critical companies have the necessary manufacturing inputs and resources to guarantee supply even in times of crisis.
