Petroleum products

Petroleum products meet about half of Switzerland’s energy requirements. As fuels and combustibles, they are extremely important for private transport and industry.

Since Switzerland has no reserves of its own, all oil supplies and petroleum products for domestic consumption must be imported by ship, pipeline, rail or truck. Because oil and petroleum are such crucial products, in the event of disruptions the NES system endeavours to support the industry in importing and distributing these products in Switzerland.

If there are problems with oil imports, the NES aims to achieve full supply by releasing compulsory stocks, followed if necessary by a gradual reduction in consumption.
