Energy: current situation

Here you will find the latest information and links on the supply situation for the various sources of energy in Switzerland, and on other energy-related topics.

Gas supplies from Russia to the west are currently severely restricted, meaning the supply situation is critical. The Federal Council is therefore calling on everyone to save energy.

The National Economic Supply (NES) has measures in place to ensure the supply of essential goods and services should shortages occur.

Natural gas

Natural gas meets about 15 per cent of Switzerland’s energy requirements. Gas supplies to Europe have been disrupted since the start of the war in Ukraine. The National Economic Supply organisation has measures in place to deal with a gas shortage, should one occur.

Oil

Motor fuels and heating oil are essential for transport and business. Should imports be disrupted, compulsory stocks of oil will be released.

Wood energy

Wood pellet heating systems are becoming more popular. However, not enough wood pellets are produced in Switzerland to meet demand, so 20% is met by imports.

Currently there are disruptions to supply from Eastern Europe because of the war in Ukraine, and so shortages may occur.

Consumers are advised to order wood pellets in good time.
