Our businesses would not be able to function without information and communications technologies (ICT). They are omnipresent in every sector of the economy, improving efficiency and productivity. If the ICT system were to fail on a large scale, the economy would no longer be able to function.
NES therefore focuses on strengthening the resilience of this sector. To achieve this goal, the FONES works closely with the relevant suppliers and operators. It identifies vulnerabilities in the telecommunications infrastructures; once identified, they can be addressed and ICT services made more resilient.
If the availability of ICT services were restricted in a crisis situation, management measures would come into play, e.g. giving telephony priority over the transmission of audio or video data. Blocking bandwidth-intensive services would free up the network and so ensure a minimum level of voice communication.
