A secure food supply is essential for human survival. Switzerland is able to produce about 50% of the food its population requires. This means that our country is reliant on imports to meet its food requirements in full.

If imports are interrupted and severe shortages result, the gap could initially be bridged from the government’s compulsory stocks. If a crisis were to last a long time, supplies would be restricted, i.e. demand could be reduced by placing restrictions on sales. As a last resort, rationing could be introduced to ensure that the supplies available were equally distributed, and domestic production could be increased so the country could meet its own needs to a larger extent.
