Around 520,000 systems are operated with wood energy; around 464,000 of these are small woodburners in residential homes (to heat individual rooms) and 19,000 are central heating systems burning pellets.
In 2021, a total of 5,844,740m3 of wood was burnt as fuel in Switzerland. The potential is estimated at 7 to 8 million cubic metres. Fuelwood comes in the form of logs, wood chips, pellets, waste wood, wood residue and brushwood.
