Petroleum products meet about half of Switzerland’s energy requirements. As fuels for heating and powering machines, they are extremely important for both private mobility and the economy.
Since Switzerland has no reserves of its own, all oil supplies and petroleum products for domestic consumption must be imported by ship, pipeline, rail or truck. Because oil and petroleum are such crucial products, the FONES endeavours to support the industry in the event of disruptions in their import or distribution in Switzerland.
If there are problems with oil imports, the FONES aims to achieve full supply by releasing compulsory stocks, followed if necessary by a gradual reduction in consumption.
